Leontopithecus chrysopygus, a small primate known as Black Lion Tamarin, is endemic from the Atlantic rainforest of Sao Paulo State (Brazil). At the present time, this species is considered, by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), to be endangered. Currently, it is estimated that there are just a thousand wild individuals, who are living in small groups with low demographic density, and under threat of local extinction due to the habitat fragmentation. There are over 50 animals maintained in captivity in different institutions in Brazil and other countries, which report difficulty in reproducing the species in captivity. Considering this, efforts have been taken to produce a data set enable to support and foment policies for the conservation of L. chrysopygus.
